Many of these convoys carried prefabricated buildings and other useful supplies from the industrial planets of New Terra Forma system. But more important were the convoys which carried thousands of chosen colonists from the planets of Twinsun, Antar and Maijpoor. Due to the influence of the space pirates in these isolated parts of the galaxy, the Empire ordered several Serpent-class cruisers to accompany the vulnerable and utterly expensive convoys.

Space pirates no longer able to attack and confiscate the precious Imperial merchant ships and their cargo soon united under the flag of Tamil Amar. Tamil Amar was known as the fierce admiral of the Red Falcons probably the most notorious space pirate band of the galaxy. Under his command dozens of pirate captains joined the fragile alliance and soon attacked escorted Imperial convoys. These armed escorts often made up by old Imperial cruisers and destroyers were no match for the experienced space pirates which operated from small made shift space stations in the proximity of the Red Planet. During the first battle of Gnui No, one of the bigger space stations, the pirates managed to destroy the Imperial Cruiser “Indigo” and damage another one. This event closed the convoy routes for a period of 6 months as no new cruisers were allowed to enter the Red Planet’s space. Enraged by the delays and losses these brigands caused the Emperor assembled a massive space fleet near the Imperial IV. This fleet contained several heavy battle cruisers of the new Scorpion-class, dozens of Serpent-class cruisers and some Imperial Marine Landing Vessels (IMLV). As soon the fleet was fully assembled, he set course toward the Gnui No space station where he arrived in 2210.

Unaware of the approach of the grand fleet, the pirate alliance fell apart. Many of the pirate chieftains left the Red Planet system as no more Imperial merchant vessels were sent towards the planet. Those who remained and engaged the Imperial fleet fought as lions outnumbered and outgunned they tried to cripple the Imperial warships by either aerial torpedoes or magnetic mines. The battle raged for several hours as the thousands of Imperial Marines boarded the enemy’s space stations. Securing these space stations was a priority as many of these stations contained massive Plasma gun batteries. Initially these massive batteries caused a tremendous amount of damage to the vulnerable IMLV’s, but once these batteries were destroyed or even used against their former owners, the tide turned. Hundreds of enemy vessels were destroyed; dozens more were boarded and confiscated. The Imperial fleet captured hundreds of enemy pirates which were trying to flee in small vessels and escape pods. By the end of the battle, the space pirates’ fleet was decimated and however Admiral Tamil Amar wasn’t capture, the space around the Red Planet was declared open again. Now able to travel to the Red Planet with almost no risk of losing your life or to be enslaved by the space pirates, new civilian convoys were gathered.

In 2222, an Imperial cruiser was attacked in the Antar system by an unknown vessel and confiscated. The hundreds of crewmembers were executed as a retribution for the decimation of the pirate fleet in the second battle of Gnui No. The rumor spread Tamil Amar and his Red Falcons were back and would soon try to establish a new brigand space station in the Red Planet’s orbit.
Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-70177196367001422232011-12-06T08:43:00.001-08:002011-12-06T12:21:25.090-08:00Targo

As the population of the Red Planet steadily grew and the colonial domains were booming. The Empire decided that it was time that private companies were allowed access to this unexploited market. As part of the great industrialization rush, many licenses were sold to private contractors ranging from permits to harvest the Red Planet’s algae to the transport of colonists between the hundreds of isolated colonies. The license of the public transport was eventually won by Targo, an intergalactic giant which also owned large parts of the Imperial transport system. Some say that the license was bought for more than Ω 575 000 000, the largest sum ever paid for a single planetary license in Imperial history!

One of Targo’s first problems was to create a safe but fast transportation network. The solution was found in the Imperial Public Transport System or IPTS, a vaste tunnel network which connected the dozens of large isolated Imperial colonies such as Relic and Imdor. The problem with this system however was the cost of a ticket and the obligation to own an Imperial pass as the Empire was strict on regulations. The cheapest solution was the creation of a large bus network that connected several non-Imperial or illegal colonies with each other. The downsides of this transportation network were the duration of the journeys and the large risk of being raided as these convoys often crossed hundreds of miles of barren wasteland. As precaution, many of the buses were fitted with extra armour plating and were always accompanied by armed escorts manned by ex-Imperial soldiers and mercenaries. Even with all these safety measurements, many convoys were often utterly destroyed and the passengers sold as slaves to Kultheans plantation owners. In an attempt to prevent the raids and increase their image, Targo founded his own military branch which sole task was to destroy Tulain and raider villages in the proximity of the bus routes.

One of the armored buses being inspected by members of the Imperial Custom Authorities on the planet of Tesla Inka, the largest manufacturer of unarmed military vehicles in the galaxy.

By the end of the great industrialization of the Red Planet, Targo became one of the most important private contractors on the Red Planet as they had the monopoly for all the public transportation. This monopoly was further strengthened as the Empire made great military use of the vaste and fast transportation network when the Tulain Rebellion broke out.
Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-17369660170755938432011-02-11T11:47:00.000-08:002011-12-04T09:14:19.896-08:00The city of Oblast
As the Globan production of Holmgard decreased, hundreds of miners which were initially attracted by the relatively safety and high wage, left the colony in search of a new way to earn a living. The best of them were employed in the modern mining colonies such as Magnar Impresso but hundreds of others weren’t so lucky.

But soon after the closure of Holmgard’s largest mining facility, a new Globan deposit was discovered by the lonely roamer, Rabunch. He discovered the Globan, in an area known as the Great Wastelands, an extremely dangerous area known to be the habitat of the most horrifying creatures that roam the Red Planet’s surface. These exaggerated reports sparked a small Globan rush among the residents of Holmgard. Spending all their money in an attempt to reach the borders of the Great Wastelands, the colonists founded the colony of Oblast. After some months the small Globan vein was exploited and the miners faced another period of poverty. Luckily, weeks before the total exploitation of the Globan, the miners traded some mirrors and blankets with a local Tulain tribe. During this trade the miners heard of large metal ore veins under the Tulain village. However this metal ore wasn’t worth as much money as the precious Globan, the quantity of ore under the Tulain village stunned the inhabitants of Oblast.

The colonist soon agreed to try and convince the Tulain to move their village further into the Great Wastelands. The Tulain chieftain offended by this impossible idea, immediately stopped the trade of Tulip and other rare desert herbs. Also offended by those savage natives, the colonist hired a small force of heavily armed mercenaries to chase away the Tulain. However the Tulain warriors were numerous and brave, they lacked adequate leadership and modern weapons. The mercenaries massacred most of the warriors and the rest of them dispersed into the Great Wastelands to be never seen again.

Some of the citizens of Oblast, managed to enslaved hundreds of Tulain and forced them to mine in the most dangerous areas of the immense mining complexes. Many of these slaves, lived their entire lives under the Red Planet’s surface never witnessing the sun or their families again. Now in control of cheap manpower and huge quantities of metal ore, the citizens of Oblast became one of the wealthier inhabitants of the Red Planet. Oblast became the place were dreams come true, miners became directors and housewives became the owners of large taverns and motels. Attracted by the glamor of this new colony, hundreds of new colonists arrived by all sorts of transport from the slow moving Tulip convoys to the modern Imperial Public Transport System or IPTS (only for authorized Imperial citizens and at a cost!)

The population of Oblast boomed as the industry flourished and the city’s economy prospered. The city of Oblast counted an population of at least 7450 citizens. Aware of the danger of the all growing Imperial influence on the Red Planet, the city banned all Imperial citizens only permitting them day passes in limited numbers. The Oblastians also formed alliances with several free cities such as T’Otal and Novo Ivelis. These three cities formed their own armies which merged into one large army when one of the free cities was invaded by large regular forces such as the Empire. This army, the second largest human army on the Red Planet counted approximately 1200 Oblastians which are drafted by lottery, 750 irregular militiamen which are hired and equipped by the notorious Fuel Boarz and the industrial city of Novo Ivelis provided the army with modern armoured vehicles and 2000 battle droids of the Novo II class, armed with VX-07 long range precision blasters.

The Emperor dislikes the idea of the free cities and especially the alliance of Oblast with the Fuel Boarz! The small industrial city was the first of hundreds and remained insignificant until about 2224.

The rapid development of Magnar Impresso stood at the forefront of the Emperor's Great Industrialization Plans in the 2220s. It was a showpiece of technical and architectural knowledge, as the city was designed and build by the finest engineers of the Empire. Huge reserves of iron and platinum ore in the area made it a prime location to build a modern industrial mining city capable of challenging its planetarian rivals as the planet of Izm and Halvmörk. However, a large proportion of the workforce had almost no industrial experience. This issue was easily solved when several hundred foreign specialists arrived to direct the work, including a team of architects headed by the chief industrial engineer Ernst Magnar.

According to original plans X-001 was to be inspired by the large industrial facilities found at Izm and Halvmörk, at the time the most prominent centers of mining and metal production in the known galaxy. The complex had a linear city design, with rows of similar superblock neighborhoods running parallel to the dozens of large factories. Planners would align living and production spheres so as to minimize necessary travel time: workers would generally live in a sector of the residential band closest to the sector of the industrial band in which they worked.

However, by the time that Magnar completed his plans for this huge project, construction of both factory and housing had already started. The metal processing factory and enormous ovens had left little room available for development, and Magnar, therefore, had to redesign his ideal city to fit the modified site. This modification resulted in a city being more "industrial" than “utopic”. Although the industrial area is concentrated on the left bank of the city, and the most residential complexes are separated and located on its right bank, the city inhabitants are still subjected to noxious fumes and factory smoke.

Years after the foundation of the city, the Emperor brought a significant change in the life of the city, the factories were reorganized and FOMAM was allowed to unite the thousands of miners and metalworkers into trade unions which provided better education and housing for their members.

Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-55145588439239754942010-10-14T11:56:00.000-07:002011-12-06T12:25:10.345-08:00The city of light, the Emerald city
The phenomena is known across the entire red planet, light beams who suddenly lighten the dark and hostile night. Local colonists and natives tell of unseen technology and strange white men but the Empire knows better. This “phenomena” also named the rays of the sun or the light towers by Imperial scientists is caused by a secret and most ingenious team of deserted scientists. The secret team of scientists was called “Faktion zwolf” or faction 12 and was assigned to research and develop a new sort of solar technology. The experiments were fertile and the Imperial commanders were already planning the conquest and colonization of numerous planets but nothing was according to plan. Several of the departments leading scientists were known pacifists and wanted to use the new technology to produce enough electricity to ban all nuclear plants on the Imperial home planets. When these heard the plans of conquest and greed, they decided to fled to the relatively deserted and unknown Red Planet.

But that wasn’t easy after destroying their lab, several were tortured and executed as enemies of the state. They released nothing of their knowledge and were buried in an unnamed grave somewhere on the desolate planet of Akapoor. The remaining 6 scientists were boarding merchant fraters and planetary liners under a false ID’s, each of them with a different destination. After a period of unseen poverty, they gathered and decided to found a new world power on the Red Planet.

They gathered a large party of scientists, engineers and civilians who hated the Empire and left for their new destination. Arrived on the planet they bought enough food, vehicles, fuel and many other large quantities of building materials and headed westwards toward the Red Ridges. Follow their instincts they entered a narrow gorge which ended in a enormous canyon system, here they decided to build their colony, known to the inhabitants as the Emerald city.

The engineers shaped the canyon, to fit in all the needed facilities such as clinics, greenhouses, houses, power plants, … The entire city was constructed in a time period of 4 years and could house 1250 inhabitants. The city’s main energy plant was the giant XI U reactor which worked by storing solar power during daytime and releasing it by night, this ever during cycle supplied the city with enough power to grow food and remain independent. The scientists also invented a new defense system including numerous massive missile installations and radar jammers. These jammers could disrupt any radar in a 500 km radius! Because of the peaceful intentions, several local tribes joined the enlighten cause scouting the huge wastelands around the Emerald city killing each armed intruder and warning people that it was prohibited to enter this part of the Red Ridges.

Attacks were scarce but fierce, the emperor heard the news of light beams lightening the red planet’s skies and sent out a scouting party to investigate the phenomena. The majority of the scouting party was killed by tribesmen but one of them was able to return to the imperial city of Relic. When the emperor heard the news of the city of light he gathered an armada of landing and warships, thousands of soldiers were embarking on a great crusade. Arrived on the Red Planet they immediately engaged and entered the Red ridges, Imperial bombers were bombing the Emerald city but couldn’t harm the city because of several defense shields and anti-rocket missile installations.

The Imperial soldiers were steadily advancing when a large hoard of tribesmen assaulted the armored convoys. The fierce tribesmen of which many were mounted on Tulips were no match for the crossfire of thousands of Imperial machineguns. However the tribesmen caused some casualties and delayed the armored columns, the armored fist wasn’t stopped. The city council declared that the fall of the Emerald city was imminent and asked the population of they were allowed to use the last but most powerful weapon of the city “rays of the sun”, this weapon was able to fire a huge beam of concentrated light which could produce of heat of 10 000 °c and covered an area of 1 km²! But mutants are a constant threat for the Boarz however the mutants are slow and not very intelligent. They often gather in immense hordes in search of fresh food. The people who inhabit these cities are called “roamers” by the settlers. The roamers travel across the entire red planet in search of new resources and new lands to inhabit. The largest of these cities house hundreds of people and exists of dozens of vehicles ranging from bikes and quads to cabs and trucks.

Many of these vehicles are scavenged from the great dumps outside the Imperial cities. However parts and fuel are scarce and there for expensive, many of the roamers are experienced metalworkers. Because of the scarcity of fuel many of the vehicles from the ever moving cities are fueled with alternative energy sources such as wind, solar power, …

The roamers are a mix of different races and ethnic groups but with one common will: the will to travel. But the life of the roamer communities is harsh, constant threats from creatures of the wasteland, other scum, shortages of water and food. The lack of food and water is a constant threat for the roamers who are not able to grow enough food for their entire convoys and are obliged to trade with other colonies and cities.

However some clever roamers have invented a new type of roamer vehicle: moving farms. These vehicles can have all sizes but have sometimes the size of 2 trucks! These vehicles are filled with earth on which crops can grow and which are heavily armed. But these moving farms aren’t fast and the traveling time of the convoys has critically increased during the last 5 years. With the heavy vehicles slowing down the convoy and the amount of food on these vehicles. Because of these reasons, farms are often the first targets of enemies and for that reason they are heavily protected and are always accompanied by several heavily armed trucks and quads.

Many of the other vehicles are lightly build but stowed with huge amounts of material and trading goods. Roamers on bikes and quads are scouting a head of the convoys in search of easy routes and sources of uncontaminated water. These scouts are the eyes and ears of the moving cities moving a head of the convoys they interrogate colonists about criminal activity and new opportunities. The scouts are often armed with scoped rifles, binoculars and radios (often they use pigeons) and are expected to survive 5 days without the support of the convoy.

Because of the constant moving these cities aren’t found on any map and their travelling routes are only know by the scouts and leaders of the convoys.

Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-39322757948698565472010-04-23T09:45:00.002-07:002011-12-06T12:19:13.338-08:00The Imperial city of Imdor
The city of Imdor is one of the smaller imperial cities to be found on the planet, the city was founded in 2219 by 15 families of pensioned soldiers. These soldiers were given plots of ground to start a peaceful new life on the red planet by the emperor himself!

Once arrived on their new homeland, they started to built humble houses. With almost no support of the empire, their existence was hard. Supplies were only arriving once in 6 months, with this insufficient flow of necessary materials and food. Because of the need of food, the settlers were forced to work as workers on large plantation farms own by Kultheans. But luckily the Kultheans are known to be friends of the Empire and are great admirers of the Imperial army.

Some of the pensioned soldiers were training local Kultheans warlord armies which were used to defend the huge plantation farms. One of them were the Kultheans others were Caladans, Tulain and Helghan. These alliances were approved by the Imperial counsel in order to strengthen the Imperial influence on the Globan rich planet.

“In the years following several accidents occurred in which allies fought each other. The Imperial settlers were pumping up water in Tulain territory , when a Tulain village chief heard that their water sources were exploited. He mounted his warriors in a furious rage and attacked the intruders, not aware of their Imperial origin. Many of the settlers were slaughtered and some of them were sold as slaves to the Kultheans. And when the news reached Imdor, the colonists gathered a small army and raided several Tulain villages. Because of the gigantic ash clouds, communication with Imperial planets and the emperor was impossible (otherwise he would have contacted the Tulain for an explanation and they could explained their misunderstanding).

With no further instructions of the emperor, the war between the Tulain and the Imperial colonists continued for another 7 months. These settlers were mostly farmers and other artisans from the planets of Antar, Maijpoor and Twinsun but life for these settlers wasn’t so hard as for the hundreds of other newly arrived colonists. Greats parts of the city were prefabricated on the industrial planets of the New Terra Forma and shipped to the red planets by convoys of hired cargo ships and accompanied by several cruisers of the serpent-class.

Arrived on the planet, the cargo liners dropped the prefabricated houses, bars and even entire industry zones onto the planet’s surface. On the other hand the warships and their crew were building the city’s defense systems, a network of trenches, walls and turrets. When this fleet left during the year of 2217, they left an entire city ready to be inhabited and a small police and military force equipped with the latest weapon technologies.

With the arrival of convoy B, the city was quickly inhabited by 441 colonists. Protected by the military force and the state of the art defense perimeters, gangs and mutants were unlikely to be able to breach the perimeters. And so the city boomed, hundreds of new authorized citizens were arriving and were friendly welcomed into the city’s inner walls. But with the boom, hundreds of unauthorized settlers were also arriving. These settlers were unable to obtain a Imperial Entry Card were not allowed within the city and were stranded outside the walls. With no future and all of their money invested in the journey toward the city. They decided to built their houses outside Relic and so the great shanties were founded, these shanties were quickly expanding because of a shortage of IEC’s. The new population in 2225 was 15 000 inhabitants with this number reached no new colonists were allowed. The estimated population of the great shanties was 35 000!

In 2225 civil unrests rose because of new and harder measures against the shanties, hundreds of shanty-houses were destroyed in order to build a new spaceport. With this news reaching the 5 militias and their families, the militias decided to ask the gangs of mutants and criminals for armistice.

The mutants and criminals agreed and were allowed to sack the city parts 3, 4 and 5 when the city’s walls were breached. Preparations were made, Some engineers from Holmgard housed in the shanties were building a large bore machine, able to drill through 15 meters of armed concrete! Militiamen were building thousands of small computerized anti-air craft guns and were buying large amounts of weapons and ammo from alien dealers. Gangs and other criminals were gathering scum from across to galaxy to storm Relic.

A week later the anti-air craft emplacements were put into action, no spaceship could enter Relic and his spaceport without severe damage. Large numbers of cargo liners and troop transporters were lost, stocks of food and many other needed materials were dwindling. The police and military force were unable to protect the city on their own. So a Relic militia was formed, each of the 5 colonist departments must recruit 450 men.

The attack followed soon but was a big disaster for the shanty town forces, in their first attempt hundreds of them died due to mines and precise machinegun emplacements. In the second and largest attack the giant bore machine was unable to breach the city’s wall and hundreds of men were killed, thousands were wounded and mutilated. In last desperate attack, militiamen were able to reach the walls and plant a flag onto one of the guard towers but luck was short lived, a fierce counterattack forced the brave 82 men to retreat.

The city of Relic survived the initial attack but more would follow soon, hundreds of new unauthorized colonists were arriving in the shanties each day.

Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-72948788182683705982010-04-23T09:43:00.000-07:002011-12-06T12:25:55.672-08:00The mining colony of Holmgard

Holmgard is one of the many civilian mining colonies who are scattered across the red planet. The colony is inhabited by miners and their families from across the galaxy but many of them are originated from Halvmörk and Izm. These planets once the main suppliers of ore and other precious metals were mined until the entire planets resources were exhausted. Because of this reason many of the experienced miners and their families left their home planets in search of new resources and work. Plenty of work can be found on the relative unknown and desolate Red Planet however the life is hard and dangerous.

The mining colony of Holmgard is part of a mining union who controls large parts of the galaxy’s mining industries. The union called “FOMAM” Federation of Miners and metalworkers represents thousands of miners and metalworkers all over the galaxy.

FOMAM’s task is to control production and take care of the miners and their family. Taking care for the families on the red planet isn’t cheap, hundreds of mercenaries are hired to protect vital parts of the industry and the mining colonies. But money isn’t a problem as the ore and metal the miners mine are valuable and scarce. Especially the sort of metals found on the red planet are worth the pain, the recently discovered “Globan” is worth Ω 150 000/ kg! He and his family were chosen to found a new mining settlement on the red planet together with a dozen of other families. The beginning was hard: scavengers, mutants and other creatures of the depths were plaguing the harmless miners. In the first month 5 miners and 12 other colonists were killed or wounded but each month new colonists were arriving in search of wealth and a better future.

7 years after the foundation, Globan was found on a depth of 621 meters below the red planet’s surface. The total number of colonists at that moment was only 150 but with the news of large amounts of Globan spread across the galaxy, colonists arrived with hundreds. The once most desolate mining colony of the FOMAM was booming but the luck was not long lived. Gangs and mutants also heard the news and were gathering to loot and sack the entire region of Holmgard, life for the settlers was becoming harder and harder. Many of them left Holmgard and founded other colonies across the red planet.

The few hundred miners left protected by a small army of mercenaries and militiamen, mined deeper and deeper in search of more scarce Globan. The price of the metal rose to Ω 350 000/ kg and FOMAM decided that all the Globan left on the planet was property of the union. Every gram of Globan leaving the planets was marked and controlled by the union.

New and bigger mining colonies were built and were heavily protected and named “X-001” and following. The resources in the mines near Holmgard were decreasing and the FOMAM decided to retreat their mercenary guards. After being the leader in Globan production, Holmgard became an ordinary small mining colony left for death by the capitalistic FOMAM. The now harmful colony was declared an easy target by the mutants and other creatures from the wastelands.

Total population left: 42

Wargame News and Terrain Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14431850500305722929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217439915252375447.post-57772179418246313352010-04-23T09:25:00.000-07:002011-12-04T09:16:17.058-08:00The start ...

"The year 2225 in the far future several planets has been colonized by earth.
